Wimbledon & Mondays

After I wrote to you today, I headed to Wimbledon for a class tour! The complex is about 45 minute tube ride from my apartment. That part stunk a little bit but it was well worth it once we arrived there.  Here's some pictures and stories from today's trip.

Wimbledon is home to the Wimbledon Championship, which is part of the Grand Slam. The Grand Slam consists of the 4 most popular tournaments, including the US Open, Australian Open, Grand Slam & French Open. It's one of the most popular tennis tournaments on earth & is actually played on grass courts. I'm not a huge tennis fan but I have heard of some of the champions before.

For all of you women out there, the champions of the women's tournament are paid the same as the men. However, the women actually play less games over the course of the tournament.

This is the closable roof. It is only on Centre Court - where the championship is held. Apparently it weighs the equivalent of like 22 elephants or something... It takes a little over 8 minutes for it to fully close but is transparent enough that the sun can shine through. The grass can stay alive for 48 hours while the roof is closed. Impressive!

Lots & lots of grass facts today...

Centre Court!

The thing in the right hand corner is the artificial sun lamp. It takes 2 weeks for it to cross the court.

Kelley!

Interesting grass sculpture.

Saint Mary's Walk - it's the path from one end of Wimbledon to the other

Hill where you can watch... Exact name is slipping my mind!

No. 1 Court - set to be refurbished soon

Wimbledon!

Overall, it was a really awesome tour. I learned a lot of useless facts about grass & the tour guide even told us, "The grass is more important than you are." Well then...

Other than that, I went to the gym & am now doing homework before heading to bed in a while. Hope all is well with all of you! Please, feel free to email me at (h.visnosky@yahoo.com) if you just want to say hi or have a comment about my blog! Also, feel free to comment at the bottom. I would love to hear from you.
